DISLOCATED WORKER PROGRAM
Brief Description of Program
The federal and state dislocated worker programs serve clients dislocated from long held jobs because of factors such as technological changes, investment decisions, and changes in consumption and competition. Services provided to clients fit into three broad categories: readjustment, retraining and supportive services. Readjustment services include: assessment, testing, job counseling, job development, and job search. Retraining services include: classroom, on the job, basic skills and literacy training. Supportive services may include assistance with paying health insurance, child care, transportation and other emergency needs as soon as an employee has a notice of permanent layoff or termination he or she can apply for services. Individuals can inquire about the Dislocated Worker Program at any local WorkForce Center Office. When applying for Reemployment Compensation, interested individuals can request information and referral to the Program. Must meet eligibility requirements. Employees who lose their jobs because of a business closing or large layoff (typically 50 or more) may be served as a group. Employers or local union leaders can contact a local WorkForce Center for more information or to begin planning for a company specific program. With early notice, a program can begin before the layoff actually takes place. In a company specific program, company management, employees, labor organizations (if present) and the community can work together to leverage local resources and tailor services to meet the needs of the group. A tailored approach might include special workshops or services delivered at the work site.
