Electronic Resume StrategiesYou could make a full time career just posting your resume on Internet resume listing services as there are probably thousands of them available, not to mention individual employer web sites. Not only is it time consuming to post your resume, but it is also time consuming to keep track of the services you used for updating and deleting purposes (when you get that job, be sure to delete or inactivate your resume on the Internet services you used).
If you are looking for employment within the state of Minnesota, the best strategy would be to first post your resume on Minnesotaworks.net (formerly MN Job Bank Resume Builder). Hundreds of local employers regularly use this service for viewing resumes. After the MN Job Bank, you may want to post your resume on a specialized job web site for the occupation you are looking for. Look at the page for full time Local Metro Job listings ( or part time ) first, then look at the pages for Specialized Job listings. Be selective. Look at the current types of positions and kinds of employers who use that site before you post your resume with them. Last of all, post your resume on one national resume listing services such as Yahoo, HotBot, etc. As a general rule of thumb, local employers will use local resume resources before a national resume resource. Be forewarned! Use common sense when giving information to any Internet resume service provider, including those using MN Job Bank. Your Social Security number and your own personal e-mail username and password account information should not be sent to Internet resume services. If you want to relocate out of Minnesota, the best strategy is to use Specialized Job listings, then a national resume listing service. Electronic portfolio bibliography E-Mail ServicesBefore you send your resume to an employer or post your resume on the Internet, you must have an e-mail address. Employers would like to contact you the same way you contacted them: electronic mail. When setting up an e-mail account: Read the e-mail site directions carefully. The site will ask you basic information such as name, address, phone number, and birth date. The site will also ask you to pick a user name and password and some other sort of identifying information you will always remember if you forgot your password (for example: What is your mother's maiden name? or What is your pet's name?). The site will also ask you some personal questions for marketing information such as job title, income, hobbies, etc. Some of these questions may be optional, some are not. If you feel uncomfortable about answering the marketing questions, you may just stop and go to another e-mail site. E-mail sites vary in the amount of personal information they request. Another option may be just to distort marketing information. The e-mail site will guide you through the steps needed to set up your account. When creating your e-mail name for job search purposes, it is best to use a professional looking e-mail address using your name. For example: John Doe@mail com E-mail addresses are not case sensitive. It does not matter if you use uppercase (CAPITALS) or lowercase letters, it will all default to lowercase letters for internet search purposes. Sometimes you see capitals in an e-mail address - this is for "making sense" out of the address JohnDoe@mail com - but typing all lowercase letters will still get you to the e-mail address. When you mail your resume or correspondence to employers via e-mail, be sure to check your e-mail account often to see if you have any responses. Also remember, most free e-mail accounts will be deleted if not used for an extended period of time: 30, 60, or 90 days depending on the site policy. The e-mail account you set up at the WorkForce Center is not through our WorkForce Center's computers, it is through the Internet. It is the same if you are at home: you are not setting up an e-mail account on your home computer, but through the Internet. You can access your e-mail account/site anywhere you find Internet access. When you use your e-mail account at the WorkForce Center, please use it for job search purposes only. If you would like to send or read personal e-mails other than at a home computer, your local library is the place to go. For a listing of all city and county libraries in Hennepin County, click here. Here are just a few free e-mail sites available on the Internet: http://www.dcemail.com You can find a comparison of features of various e-mail sites at http://www.about-the-web.com/shtml/email.shtml Setting up an email account 1. Choose an email provider. For a list of providers of free e-mail, go to www.about-the-web.com and click on the topic "Email programs" When this topic opens, go to the bottom of the table of providers of free email.
2. Review the table. Choose a provider. Open the provider's web site by clicking on the name (in blue print)
3. When the website opens, find the instructions to open an account and go through the steps. Read and follow the instructions carefully! Note that your free e-mail account must be accessed regularly to prevent it being closed by the provider.
4. You will be required to create a login or user name and password. Since the person receiving your email-possibly a potential employer- will see your login or user name, keep it professional looking. Document the login or user name and password you have created - the WorkForce Center staff does not have access to this information and will be unable to help you access your account..
5. Computers in the WorkForce Center Resource Room are to be used for job search related activities only. This includes the internet and email access.
6. You can access this account anywhere you can access the internet such as at the public library.
We "recommend" www.yahoo.com or www.hotmail.com for easy and free email providers
